So, apparently, my question last time, “can Anderson/Wakeman deliver the goods” has been answered!  Some of the East Coast US reviews are starting to surface, and, let’s just say I am thrilled we got our tickets!!  This is promising to be a trip down Yes memory lane with nods to brand new music composed by the duo.  Not wanting to speak out of turn, I am going to wait for the show to make any decisions about the new material.  The good news is, I won’t be waiting long as Anderson and Wakeman are coming to my “hood” tomorrow and I will have pen in hand, trusty photographer armed with photo pass, and I will be happily passing on all the dish about the show!!!

But let’s give a look at what Anderson/Wakeman’s PR folks have to say about this latest release and corresponding tour”:

11/5/2011 – London, UK – As a follow-up to their critically acclaimed CD ‘The Living Tree’ from 2010, YES legends Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman prepare to release ‘Anderson / Wakeman – The Living Tree In Concert Part One’ on Gonzo Multimedia on November 28th. The CD was recorded during the duo’s British tour in 2010 and comes housed in a sleeve design by Mark Wilkinson who was also responsible for the design of the artwork for ‘The Living Tree’.

REVIEWS:

“Beyond The Lightless Sky, doesn’t stay in one place for too long; instead, it veers between motorcycle-revving D-beat, bog-trawling doom, sinister black metal, Neurosis drum-offs and hypnotic passages that gnash like a venom-dripping cousin to the final Isis album.” — Village Voice

“While drawing from the thunder of Isis and early Mastodon, the band also creeps in soaring melodies that border on Torche territory.” — Brooklyn Vegan

“Headbanging, growling, deliciously downtuned stoner metal. Hull s three guitar attack achieves maximum sludgery, bashing your skull into the wall with a sledgehammer and smearing your brains across the floor.” – Metalsucks

“Hull are well-educated in the school of metal, proving themselves to be as equally adept at Melvins-derived abstract, skull-crushing sludge as they are at proggy-guitar workouts or spiralling thrash-cum-punk riffs…” — The Skinny

“Brooklyn-based quintet Hull have been raising eyebrows in the underground metal scene with their engrossing blend of Neurosis-esque post-metal ambience, Mastodon-like downtuned southern groove, intricate progressive structures and psychedelic doom rumblings.” — One Metal

JULIE SLICK, BAREFOOT AND ON HER OWN!! CHALK ONE UP FOR THE YOUTH OF AMERICA!

Once again, nothing like that personalized, autographed CD cover.

Once again, nothing like that personalized, autographed CD cover.

If you caught my last post, I went on about a talented young bassist by the name of Julie Slick who plays bass in the Adrian Belew Power Trio.  For this young lady to be able to handle parts by bassists of such renown as Tony Levin, Les Claypool and others, as well as converting parts played on the Chapman Stick and Warr Guitar, is an ambitious feat in itself.  So it was of little surprise to me that she could conjure up a series of songs to compile a solo disc.  What was surprising was the depth and imaginativeness as well as the maturity and depth of composition this young artist has displayed.  Again, if you are looking for Katy Perry, Lada Yada, or other pop divas of that ilk, this ain’t it.  This is the direction of progressive music of the female gender.  Artists like Tori Amos, Nina Hagen, even some instrumental Laurie Anderson come to mind.  Slick professes not to be a vocalist, but I’d love to comprise this line-up: Amos on keyboards and vocals, Anderson on keyboards, violin, electronics and vocals, Slick on bass and electronics, and Maureen Tucker of Velvet Underground (Anderson’s husband Lou Reed’s former bandmate) on percussion and anything else she wants.

GoGo’s my gluteus maximus (and at my age, it is maximus)…

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE RETURN TRIUMPHANT TO TERMINAL 5 IN NYC, 3-25-11

The new and improved Queens Of The Stone Age seminal first album. The re-release has garnered such interest that the band embarked on a tour shortly after a near-death experience by frontman Josh Homme.

The new and improved Queens Of The Stone Age seminal first album. The re-release has garnered such interest that the band embarked on a tour shortly after a near-death experience by frontman Josh Homme.

It was no surprise that the Queens Of The Stone Age (QOTSA) sold out its first tour in many years.  They left fans wanting more after their Era Vulgaris tour, and Josh Homme teased us with his super-group Them Crooked Vultures, which was also economically viable to the point where his cohorts in the band (Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Led Zepplin bassist/keyboardist/arranger John Paul Jones) want to keep the band productive.

But perhaps it was (according to Rolling Stone) Homme’s recent death scare that made people sell out this tour AND FAST!  You see, if you follow QOTSA, you know that Homme has had trouble with his knee and an emphysema-like illness since the Over The Years and Through The Woods era.  For those of you not familiar with this incident, please read on…

HISTORIC RECORDINGS OF FAIRPORT CONVENTION WITH SANDY DENNY LIVE AT EBBETS FIELD 1974 SEES CD RELEASE

Unearthed recordings of Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny surface on CD.

Unearthed recordings of Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny surface on CD.

3/16/2011 – Philadelphia, PA – Much to the excitement of Fairport Convention and Sandy Denny fans around the globe, Philadelphia’s ItsAboutMusic.comwill release ultra rare recordings of the famed UK group recorded live at Ebbets Field in Denver, Colorado May 23/24, 1974. Produced and digitally remastered by Fairport Convention’s Jerry Donahue for ItsAboutMusic.com, the 1974 line-up of Fairport Convention on these recordings feature Sandy Denny (Vocals, Piano), Dave Mattacks (Drums), Jerry Donahue (Lead Guitar, Vocals), Dave Pegg (Bass,Vocals), Trevor Lucas (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar) and Dave Swarbrick (Vocals, Violin). This historical audio documentation catches the band at the height of their career performing to an ecstatic audience.

Fairport Convention are an English folk rock band formed in 1967, who are still recording and touring today, and are considered “the most important group in the English folk rock movement”. Their critically acclaimed album Liege and Lief helped launch the English folk rock movement. The vast number of personnel who have passed through band’s revolving door are amongst the most highly regarded and influential musicians of their era, and have gone on to work with many significant bands. Since 1979 the group has hosted the Cropredy Festival, a large annual event held in England. Individually and collectively the members of Fairport Convention have garnered numerous awards recognizing their contribution to music and culture.Fairport Convention was formed around 1967, and originally played a ”harmony-and guitar-based folk-rock style” strongly influenced by Californian groups of the day like the Byrds. The line-up that recorded their self-titled debut album in 1968 featured Richard Thompson, Ian Matthews, and Simon Nicol on guitars; Ashley Hutchings on bass; Judy Dyble on vocals; and Martin Lamble on drums. Fairport Convention didn’t reach their peak until Dyble was replaced after the first album in 1968 by Sandy Denny, who had previously recorded both as a solo act and with the Strawbs. Denny has been touted as the best British folk-rock singer of all time. This incarnation of the band would record two well-received albums. When Ian Matthews left the band in early 1969, and Martin Lamble (still in his teens) died in an accident involving the group’s equipment van in mid-1969, Fairport regrouped, replacing Lamble with Dave Mattacks, and adding Dave Swarbrick on fiddle. Their repertoire became much more traditional, and electrified traditional folk numbers would dominate their next album, Liege and Lief (1969).

This line-up didn’t last long and by the end of the ’60s Ashley Hutchings had left to join Steeleye Span (he was replaced by Dave Pegg). Sandy Denny also left the group to form Fotheringay with Jerry Donahue. Richard Thompson remained for Full House (1970), but by the beginning of 1971 he too had departed, leaving Nicol as the only original member. Sandy Denny would actually return to the group for about a year and a half in the 1970s, prior to her death in 1978. Fairport Convention have continued on and off for the last 25 years, touring and performing frequently. To this day, the band is supported by a devoted fan base. Now with the release of Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny – Ebbets Field 1974, one important chapter of the band’s history is preserved for generations to enjoy. Here’s a magic recording of Sandy Denny, Jerry Donahue, Trevor Lucas, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg and Dave Mattacks captured live!

Poor Man’s Poison

Originally published on Too Old To Rock & Roll…Too Young To Die back in September. This one gets better with each and every listen. Tell Karl Jr. or Jamie to get you one of these if you are a fan of any type of Americana music…

Poor Man’s Poison are a group of musical friends from California.  They play acoustic music on traditional bluegrass instruments but this is far from traditional sounding.  You get all kinds of influences from folk to reggae in their style.  Think of perhaps Jack Johnson having grown up in Appalachia instead of Hawaii.  I mean this in a really good way.  There is a sweet, laid-back vibe to this record.  Tight harmonies and great playing infuse the songs with such a good feeling.

You can hear their influences throughout the album, proudly worn on their sleeves.  Walkin’ owes more than a small debt to Bob Marley, go figure that reggae-bluegrass works and works well.  The lead track At The Winds Will is a standout that pretty much sums up the many talents of this band:  good songs with great harmonies played extremely well.  Slow Down is another track I really liked.  The advice of the band to stop and smell the roses is driven home by a tune that just gets you to downshift a little and catch your breath.  Greedy Man switches things up and is an indictment of our less than charitable sides.  The only miss for me was Christmas Beers which must come off great live but sees to me to be a bit of a throw away.

As the summer ends and we all head back to work or school you would do yourself a solid if you grab this one.  I have a feeling I will be playing it quite a bit.   I suggest that you do.

KICK ASS CD!!!! Black Country Communion!

Band: Black Country Communion
Album: Black Country Communion
Label
: JNRA
Release Date
: Out now
By Karl Jr.

CD – $14.99

LP – $29.99

Hey Guys,

Are you ready to rock? Then RUN to Looney Tunes and get this CD. Better yet get it on VINYL! Black Country Communion is Glenn Hughes, Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham, Derek Sherinian.

Black Country Communion is a devastating head-on collision between American and British rock influences—a true supergroup that delivers a titanic rock experience greater than the sum of its supremely talented parts. The seed for Black Country Communion was planted when legendary frontman and bass guitarist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Trapeze) and master blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa combined forces on stage in Los Angeles in November 2009 for an explosive performance at Guitar Center’s King of the Blues event.
The brainchild of producer Kevin Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin), the band added to its rock lineage with powerhouse drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner) and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theatre, Billy Idol, Alice Cooper). Named after the industrial area in Britain where both Hughes and Bonham were born and raised, Black Country Communion began rehearsing and recording tracks written by both Bonamassa and Hughes at Shangri-La Studios in early 2010. Their new Album, which has yet to be named, will debut in September 2010. The band is planning a tour of select venues in 2011.

Black Country Communion band members:

Glenn Hughes:
‘The Voice Of Rock’ is a true original. No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. That astonishing voice is Hughes’ calling card. He’s known as a singer’s singer, with 80+ gold and platinum albums and collective sales of over 100 million units to his name. Glenn has been at the forefront of the music scene since first achieving success in 1970 with his band Trapeze, before going on to worldwide recognition in 1973 when he joined one of the most popular bands in the world, Deep Purple. Hughes’ R&B-infused bass lines and explosive vocal range blazed throughout the band’s hugely successful world tours and albums, including their classic 1974 release, Burn.
Following Deep Purple’s split in 1976, Hughes made countless guest appearances as a vocalist, bass guitarist and songwriter on other artists’ albums, including Black Sabbath’s Seventh Star.
Since 1992, Hughes has toured extensively in Europe, Asia and South America in support of solo albums, including the acclaimed Soul Mover and his most recent release, First Underground Nuclear Kitchen, both featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

Joe Bonamassa:
Part prodigy, part virtuoso, (the rest being mercilessly honed guitar skills and tireless work ethic) Joe Bonamassa has been building his reputation as one of the world’s greatest guitar players since his career started, at age 12, performing with B.B. King.
Heavily influenced by British and Irish rock legends like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Rory Gallagher, Bonamassa went on to tour and perform with artists including Buddy Guy, Foreigner, Bad Company, Joe Cocker and Gregg Allman before beginning his recording career in the early ‘90s with Bloodline, a hard-charging rock-blues band with the sons of Robby Kreiger (The Doors), Miles Davis and Berry Oakley (The Allman Brothers Band). Going solo as a singer/songwriter, Bonamassa recorded his critically acclaimed debut album, A New Day Yesterday, with legendary producer Tom Dowd.
Barley into his 30s with twenty years of experience in the music business and recorded a total of ten albums on his own independent label J&R Adventures (six of which debuted at 1 on the Billboard’s Blues Chart), Bonamassa sold out London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall in less than a week in 2009 for a stunning performance filmed for the DVD Joe Bonamassa: Live From Royal Albert Hall, featuring a guest appearance by Eric Clapton. “Always on the road,” Bonamassa performs his transformational live act at more than 200 concerts around the world each year including touring during 2010 in support of his most recent release, the Billboard blues 1(and 39 on the Top 200 Chart) album Black Rock, and plans to reunite with Eric Clapton for the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago.

Jason Bonham:
The legacy of Led Zeppelin lives on in Jason Bonham, British drummer and son of Zep’s legendary John Bonham. Inheriting the best of his father’s skills while mastering his own distinctive and dynamic technique, Bonham blasted onto the world stage at age 17 with the band Air Race, opening for huge draws like Queen, Meat Loaf and AC/DC. In 1988, Bonham took his father’s spot in the televised, first-ever Led Zeppelin reunion at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary Concert. Later that year, Bonham toured with Jimmy Page and recorded his album, Outrider.
Earning a gold record on the track “Wait for You” from his solo album The Disregard of Timekeeping, Bonham went on to team up with Paul Rodgers, Slash, David Gilmore and Jeff Beck to record the Grammy-nominated album, Tribute to Muddy Waters.
Bonham has made a career of stunning audiences around the world, touring with The Healing Sixes and Foreigner and rejoining his late father’s band members for the most anticipated concert of all time, 2007’s Led Zeppelin reunion at London’s O2 Arena. In 2006, Bonham recorded the year’s top billboard blues album, You and Me with Joe Bonamassa.

Derek Sherinian:
A versatile keyboardist who mixes technical proficiency with distinctively raw power, Derek Sherinian has toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in rock. Sherinian got his big break in 1989, touring with legendary shock-rocker Alice Cooper in support of the multi-platinum albums Trash and Hey Stoopid.
In 1991, Sherinian caught the attention of Gene Simmons, joining Kiss for their Revenge tour and recording Alive III. Moving into progressive rock, Sherinian joined Dream Theater in 1994, recording three albums and performing on two world tours.
Going solo in 1999, Sherinian has recorded six albums, teaming up with legends including Billy Idol, Slash, Al DiMeola, Steve Lukather (Toto) and Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne) to create a catalogue of music that fuses hard rock intensity with dynamic, jazz-infused flair.

Peace…Karl Jr.
